The Walt Disney Family Museum

The Walt Disney Family Museum, located in San Francisco’s Presidio, it is an amazing collection of Disney history and memorabilia. There is even a huge model of the Disneyland of Walt’s Imagination, which is perhaps my favorite thing in the museum.

Every Disney fan should make a pilgrimage to this wonderful place at some point in their life. It is definitely worth it. They have amazing special events and programs if you can make them. Their website.

Walt's Birthday

Today, 112 years ago, Walt Disney was born in Chicago. I'm sure the people around him couldn't imagine all that he would come to accomplish in his life.

I saw "Saving Mr. Banks" last night. It actually had a decent portrait of Walt Disney as a human being, and not a perfect fantasy version of him. He was a man who was able to do many wonderful things for the world but he was simply just doing his best. I wish we all could.

Walt’s Barn in Griffith Park

A little known free Disney attraction is the Barn Walt Disney used to house his trains and tools at his house on Carolwood Drive. Now located in Griffith Park and open to the public on the third Sundays of every month, it is full of Disneyana and railroading ephemera. Lots of historical items and souvenirs fill the walls. Also on the grounds are a Retlaw1 Combine from the Disneyland Railroad before the cars were altered for quicker loading and unloading; and an exhibit about the upcoming Small World's of Walt, some of the original buildings from Disneyland's Storybookland Canal Boats and Casey Jr. Circus Train need restoration.

"When You Wish" The Story of Walt Disney

The Pre-Broadway production at UCLA's Freud Playhouse of "When You Wish" The Story of Walt Disney sure has some magic in it. Starting in the notes on the Production Team, with Playwright/Composer/Producer Dean McClure, who was inspired by watching his daughter's dream come true of dancing in a parade at Disneyland, to create a Broadway Musical based on the life of Walt Disney. And here it is, playing in Los Angeles until November 3rd.

This musical hits all the notes you'd expect of a Broadway Musical. With drama, laughs, dance, and a cast able to meet the challenges. A few liberties were taken, which may well jar the Disney Fanatic, but it was still and enjoyable play. There was a focus on the daily life of Walt and what he must have felt at times when the world around him didn't want to go along with his new ideas and the struggle it mush have been. We often think of him as this perfect shining example of entertaining genius, without realizing the costs of being a genius. Much of Disney's success is owed to his brother Roy Disney who appropriately features prominently in the play.

The website for the play can be found here.

A bit of a hidden treasure on the D23 website is the site for the famed Disney Archives. Filled with revealing looks behind the scene of many Disney stories over the years, this website, open to the public, deserves a look. It has features on Ask Dave Smith, Photo Library, Walt Disney, and Disney History.
